Balinese Leaders Eye Tourism Villages in Canggu for Sustainable Development

Officials from Badung Regency in Bali recently gathered to discuss the creation of tourism villages in Canggu, a district that has seen rapid tourism growth over the past seven years. This growth has led local leaders to explore methods to preserve the area's cultural heritage and traditional values.

The former Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, championed the designation of Canggu’s Traditional Village as an official tourism village to better manage its resources and obtain more funding to protect its cultural and natural surroundings.

During the discussions, Pastika, together with I Wayan Suarsana, Head of Canggu Traditional Village, and Ni Kadek Dwi Indah Paramita, Director of Baga Utsaha Padruwen Traditional Village in Canggu, highlighted the advantages of the tourism surge. However, they also stressed the importance of sustainable practices and improving living standards for the local community. Pastika pointed out the significance of local agricultural areas, such as rice fields, which support food production and offer a scenic balance to the built-up tourist areas.

Ni Kadek Dwi Indah Paramita reported that since Baga Utsaha Padruwen Traditional Village was established in 2022, it has significantly boosted local business revenues, increasing village taxes.

The meeting also addressed critical issues like waste management in Canggu. I Wayan Suarsana outlined plans for a major waste treatment facility and highlighted existing local waste initiatives, such as waste banks. He also discussed potential partnerships with business owners to make Canggu a benchmark for waste management, awaiting land deals with the provincial government.

Additionally, Suarsana detailed financial targets for the Traditional Village aimed at enhancing residents’ economic status through strategic asset acquisitions.

Canggu's evolution is notable from a quiet fishing village to a thriving tourist destination featuring attractions like Atlas Beach Club. As Bali aims to implement sustainable and culturally aware tourism strategies in 2024 and beyond, Canggu stands as a prime example of the balance between development and preservation.
