Thirteen international airlines are planning to introduce direct flights to Bali, targeting major markets such as China, Russia, Japan, India, and the United States. These routes are currently in the proposal stage.

Handy Heryudhitiawan, the General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Bali Airport, shared that some airlines have submitted requests for regular flight slots. While these requests have been made, the services have not yet commenced. Several airlines, which secured slots for the 2023 dry season, have yet to begin operations.

“They are required to reapply for flight approvals, including their schedules and the type of aircraft they intend to use,Handy explained.

The airport is still awaiting confirmations on these proposed plans.

According to Tjok Bagus Pemayun, Head of Bali’s Provincial Tourism Office, three or four of these proposed airlines are from China. Prior to the pandemic, 15 Chinese cities had direct flights to Bali, but none are currently operational.

Pemayun anticipates that these flights might resume by March 2023, though specific details on the airlines or routes have not been confirmed. Presently, Ngurah Rai Airport manages 24 international routes serviced by 29 airlines. Pemayun remains hopeful that the return of Chinese flights will help Bali reach its 2023 target of 4.5 million international tourists, as China is Bali's second-largest tourism market.

South Korean Airlines Expanding Routes to Bali

Additionally, South Korean carriers Air Busan and Jeju Air are set to launch direct flights to Bali. The increasing demand from South Korean tourists is driving this expansion, according to Angkasa Pura I, Bali’s airport operator.

“Global demand for flights to Bali remains strong,Handy Heryudhitiawan noted.

Both South Korean airlines are in the final stages of preparation, with launch dates yet to be finalized. Jeju Air has already received clearance to operate flights from Incheon and Busan to Bali.

Currently, direct flights between South Korea and Bali are operated by Garuda Indonesia and Korean Air. Ngurah Rai Airport now accommodates 33 international routes through 36 airlines, along with 19 domestic routes by 13 airlines.

In the first quarter of 2023, Ngurah Rai Airport saw 5.1 million passengers, a 17 percent rise compared to the same period in 2023. The airport aims to handle 23.6 million passengers by year-end.

Data from Indonesia’s Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reveals that South Korea was the fifth largest source of tourists to Bali between January and April 2023. During this time, the number of South Korean tourists increased by 37 percent, reaching around 82,000 visitors.

Etihad Airways also recently commenced direct flights from Abu Dhabi to Bali in June, utilizing Boeing 787-900 aircraft.
